Summary

While I missed the 40th anniversary of this one by a week, it's certainly a show that merits listening to, even if (or perhaps because) it only exists in a very good audience format. This one comes from January 10, 1979 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale NY. While the first set, which we will hear this week, is not as outstanding as next week's Set 2, it is certainly enjoyable, in my opinion and has some nice highlights.

The boys start out by taking us to the Promised Land, which gets everyone up on their feet. The Dire Wolf makes his appearance, then a very nice Mama Tried>Mexicali Blues with some nice Garcia flourishes throughout. Jerry's voice is a little strained at time, to my ears, but he makes up for it in the Tennessee Jed that follows with some excellent solo work inside. While this time marks the end of the great Keith and Donna period, Donna does some very nice work on the 'Looks Like Rain' that follows. This long first set has some ebb and flo, but don't miss the fine 'Loser' which marked the last appearance of 'Sweet Susie', or the powerful 'Music Never Stopped' that closes the set - classic Dead.

0:20.9	this one. It is an audience recording, but it's a pretty good one and sometimes a good audience recording is better than a sound board. I hope you enjoy this. I really did, so I'm hoping you will. The first set, it a really nice long show. The first set contains

0:40.3	as usual with dead shows but we'll hear the whole show because I'm a
0:44.4	completest and I think there's plenty to like in this first set it starts out with
0:48.1	the rock and promised land dire wolf follows Jerry does a really nice job here
0:52.3	his voice is a little little bit strained at Direwolf follows Jerry does a really nice job here.

0:55.3	but he makes up for it with it playing.

1:01.3	Jerry does some really nice thrills there with the guitar.
1:05.1	Tennessee Jed follows nice some nice interludes there as well. Looks like
1:10.3	Rain as really nice Donna duet with Bobby there. I think you'll really enjoy that.
1:18.0	Staggerly, El Paso, Row Jimmy follow. Some of those drag a little bit, but you know it's the usual ebb and flow of a set.
1:27.3	Passenger is always rocking. Loser follows and this loser's significant and that's the last time Jerry brings Sweet Susie
1:35.5	along for the ride so enjoy that they end with a rockin music never stops to close a set and and it's really nice. I think it's a great first set. I hope you enjoy it. I hope that wherever you're at this week the winter storm doesn't snow you in I'm afraid it's going to hit quite a few people
1:58.0	and then the cold wave is going to hit people so bundle up hopefully keep those bones shaking and stay warm.
