Thursday morning, and we are asking the big question this morning, will Schumer strategy work?

It is day two of the government shutdown, and it's

difficult to see real movement toward a resolution of the standoff anytime soon. The Senate isn't

voting today in observance of Yom Kippur. Senators will vote again on Friday on both the House

passed November 21st Stopgap funding bill and the Democratic counterproposal.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer may meet Friday, their

first 101 sit down in the stand-off, and we've got some news here. If Democrats block the

measure again on Friday, Thune will send senators home for the weekend and force another vote

Monday. But that means there will be no

Saturday votes as originally planned. Now, what's interesting and what we are watching closely

are the informal bipartisan talks centering around Democrats' chief demand, an extension of the

Obamacare enhanced premium tax credits. We took you inside that big bipartisan Senate floor huddle in Wednesday's midday edition.

I think what's important to understand here and what we note in the AM edition is that party

leaders aren't directly involved.

This is lawmakers.

There isn't a Senate gang to break the deadlock, and the fundamentals of this showdown haven't changed.
