0:07.0	Over the next few days, we're reading about the hinge point of history and the
0:16.6	foundation of our faith. Even though they may be familiar to you, try not to rush
0:21.1	through these readings or gloss over them.
0:23.0	Sit with them if you can.
0:25.0	Today's reading has a lot in common with tomorrow's reading,
0:27.6	so today we'll recap the first half,
0:29.4	then tomorrow we'll tackle the last half.
0:31.8	As the day breaks, Jesus has been through three religious trials, and the rulers declare
0:36.2	him guilty.
0:37.2	The next step, if they want to enact the death penalty, is to present him to the Roman
0:41.2	Governor Pontius Pilate, because only the Romans can hand down the death penalty.
0:45.3	So he's taken from his religious trials to a civil trial. With Pilate, the people accused
0:50.3	Jesus of claiming to be a king since that would pose a threat to the Roman authorities.
0:54.1	In Luke's account they even say Jesus had forbidden him to pay their taxes to Caesar,
0:58.4	but we know that's a lie based on his response to them in Luke 20.
1:01.9	Pilot questions him about being a king,
1:04.0	and in John's account, Jesus explains that his kingdom is not of this world.
1:08.0	Otherwise, his followers would be fighting, and they aren't.
1:11.0	He says he's not there to fight but to speak truth.
1:14.0	Then Pilate responds with a question that has always been a popular response to the
1:18.0	Gospel. What is truth? In Luke's account, Pilate sends Jesus to King Herod before proceeding with things.
