0:18.8	After abusing the Pharisees and Sadducees, two groups of leaders in the religious community,
0:23.2	Jesus turns the experience into a teaching tool for his disciples.
0:27.1	As he often does, Jesus uses the things around them as metaphors, but sometimes, like today,
0:32.3	it can be confusing for the disciples because they think he's talking about the physical
0:36.0	thing, not the spiritual thing.
0:37.8	Jesus compares the teachings of the Pharisees and the Sadducees to leaven.
0:41.7	For those of us who don't spend much time in the kitchen or on the cooking channel,
0:44.8	here's a quick leaven lesson.
0:46.4	It makes bread rise, and a tiny amount leavens the whole loaf.
0:50.4	The Jews have a long standing tie to unleaven bread, and they even have a feast that
0:54.3	features it.
0:55.2	The feast of unleavened bread, also known as Passover.
0:58.6	Back to the illustration, Jesus says the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees is like
1:03.1	leaven.
1:04.1	In other words, just getting a little bit of their teaching mixed in with what you believe
1:08.0	will impact the way everything pans out.
1:10.8	These two groups have some major differences with each other, and we'll link to a short
1:14.4	article about those differences in the show notes today.
1:17.1	But the thing they have in common is that their teachings are primarily focused on morality.
