0:07.0	Today we dropped out on a new gospel, Matthew, and even though he's a new gospel to us in our reading plan, he's quite possibly the oldest of the four Gospels.
0:21.0	Most people believe this is Matthew the Apostle
0:23.4	slash disciple of Jesus who was a tax collector before Jesus called him.
0:27.2	Given his attention to numbers and money and return on investment, it seems likely.
0:32.0	Matthew's unique lens on Jesus is Jesus as King.
0:36.0	As a refresher, Luke's lens is Jesus as man,
0:39.5	and Johns is Jesus as God.
0:41.5	So far, we have Jesus as God, man, and king. Matthew starts out by giving
0:46.6	us the lineage of Jesus, and if you were with us in the Old Testament, you probably recognized
0:50.8	at least a few of these people. Here are three things worth noting about this genealogy.
0:55.6	First, it includes women.
0:57.4	That's unheard of in ancient Jewish genealogies.
1:00.4	So we can see right out of the gate that the message Jesus sent his disciples about women
1:05.1	was one of inclusion. Jesus obviously taught Matthew that women matter, otherwise he would
1:10.1	have left them out. Second, his inclusion extends beyond just gender because this genealogy
1:16.0	also includes Gentiles. That's any non-Jew, and it includes people with scandalous histories.
1:22.4	For instance, rehab had been a pagan and it includes people with scandalous histories.
1:22.6	For instance, rehab had been a pagan prostitute,
1:26.1	and we don't have time to go into all the stuff
1:27.9	David and Solomon did.
1:29.5	The message God sends in this genealogy is one of redemption. He says, you belong here in my family.
