0:07.0	Today's chapters are dark and graphic. It's not exactly like reading. But in every
0:18.7	heavy paragraph in every dark chapter there's still something we can learn about God. It's true on these
0:24.3	pages and it's true in our own stories too. Before we jump in just know that I'm going to do my
0:29.6	best to make this appropriate for all our listeners.
0:33.0	The Bible itself is graphic enough, so I'll try to go easy on explaining things in detail.
0:38.3	Chapter 23 is one big metaphor.
0:40.9	God is talking about two women, but this isn't about women at all.
0:44.0	The women represent two cities.
0:46.0	Samaria, which is the capital city of the Northern Kingdom of Israel,
0:50.0	and Jerusalem, which is the capital city of the Southern Kingdom of Judah. And we've seen many times
0:55.0	where Yaway has portrayed his relationship with his people as a marriage.
0:59.0	And any time his people wander off to other gods, he compares it to adultery. He uses a picture of intimate
1:05.0	betrayal to show what's happening on a spiritual level. So while there definitely was sexual
1:10.4	sin happening in both Samaria and Jerusalem, that's only a fraction of the broader point
1:15.6	chapter 23 is trying to make.
1:17.8	The major point is, the people of these cities have turned their eyes away from
1:21.5	Yawe, who has always provided for them and protected
1:24.4	them, and instead they've looked to other nations to save them.
1:28.0	They've paid them tribute for protection, and as they've grown more familiar with them and tried
1:32.0	to earn their favor, they've also become enamored with their gods and worshipped them instead.
1:37.0	First 7 is talking about Samaria, and it says,
