0:13.2	Today's chapters are dark and graphic.
0:16.2	It's not exactly light reading, but in every heavy paragraph, in every dark chapter,
0:21.4	there's still something we can learn about God.
0:23.8	It's true on these pages, and it's true in our own stories, too.
0:27.6	Before we jump in, just know that I'm going to do my best to make this appropriate for

0:33.0	The Bible itself is graphic enough, so I'll try to go easy on explaining things in detail.
0:38.3	Chapter 23 is one big metaphor.
0:41.0	God is talking about two women, but this isn't about women at all.
0:44.4	The women represent two cities, Samaria, which is the capital city of the Northern Kingdom
0:49.2	of Israel, and Jerusalem, which is the capital city of the Southern Kingdom of Judah.
0:53.9	And we've seen many times where Yahweh has portrayed his relationship with his people
0:57.9	as a marriage, and anytime his people wander off to other gods, he compares it to adultery.
1:03.4	He uses a picture of intimate betrayal to show what's happening on a spiritual level.
1:08.5	So while there definitely was sexual sin happening in both Samaria and Jerusalem, that's
1:13.5	only a fraction of the broader point chapter 23 is trying to make.
1:17.8	The major point is, the people of these cities have turned their eyes away from Yahweh,
1:22.1	who has always provided for them and protected them, and instead they've looked to other
1:26.6	nations to save them.
1:28.0	They've paid them tribute for protection, and as they've grown more familiar with them
1:31.6	and tried to earn their favor, they've also become enamored with their gods and worshiped
