0:13.2	Today we have another flashback to a previous king.
0:16.2	In fact, much of the rest of Jeremiah will take us back and forth in the timeline, so try
0:20.7	to hold the order loosely.
0:21.8	I know that can be chronologically frustrating, but the commentaries assure me that all of
0:26.2	this is actually intentional.
0:28.4	For instance, the last thing we read about yesterday was Judah's unfaithfulness, and
0:32.6	today we open with a story about the strict obedience of the Rehobites.
0:37.4	Commentators think God really wanted to highlight the contrast between the two, so he had
0:41.4	Baruch put the story side by side.
0:43.6	If you don't recognize the name Rehobites, don't worry, we haven't met them before.

1:01.6	God tells Jeremiah to invite them to the temple and offer them wine, but they all refuse,
1:06.4	because a long time ago, one of their ancestors commanded that their family limit their possessions
1:10.8	and avoid alcohol altogether, and they'd been honoring this command for over 200 years.
1:16.6	They have a heritage of obedience that puts Israel's to shame.
1:21.0	God tells Jeremiah to point this out to both groups of people.
1:24.3	To let the Israelites know they'll be punished for their rebellion, and to let the Rehobites
