0:07.0	Today we finished finished our 22nd book of the Bible. I know that's only a third of the way
0:17.4	through the number of books in the Bible. There are 66. But as far as word count is
0:22.2	concerned, we're well over halfway through our trip through
0:24.8	scripture together.
0:25.8	Okay, let's wrap up Isaiah.
0:28.6	In chapter 64, we encounter a section that I've misunderstood for most of my life.
0:33.7	It's in verse six and it says,
0:35.8	we have all become like one who is unclean
0:38.4	and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
0:42.0	For years I thought this meant that all my God honoring works
0:45.2	were still tainted by my flesh and displeasing to him. By the way that phrase
0:49.9	polluted garment is actually the Hebrew phrase used in ancient times to refer to a woman's
0:55.5	menstrual rag.
0:57.0	So that's a pretty intense comparison if that's what all our righteous deeds are like.
1:01.1	That's not just humbling, that's actually demotivating. But that's exactly
1:05.8	why context and culture are important to remember, because they help us understand something
1:10.1	in this verse that might not be immediately obvious.
1:13.4	In ancient Israel, people who are unclean,
1:16.2	like this first mentions, couldn't enter the temple
1:18.6	without first being purified.
1:20.7	And when women were having their period, they weren't allowed in the temple either.
