0:07.0	Today we started Ecclesiasties, which is part of the wisdom literature in
0:16.8	scripture, and tomorrow we'll finish it. It's written by someone called the
0:20.6	preacher or the teacher, and that may or may not be
0:23.4	Solomon but many people believe it points to the life of Solomon regardless of who
0:28.2	wrote it. This book is ultimately about a grand experiment that the main
0:31.9	character sets up.
0:33.0	He has lots of resources at his disposal
0:36.0	and he wants to find out how to live the best, most joyful kind of life.
0:40.0	Then he unpacks everything he learns
0:42.0	so that we don't have to go through this experiment for ourselves.
0:45.2	He basically buys every single thing on Amazon and writes a concise 12 chapter review sharing all his data with us
0:51.2	to let us know what's worth our time and energy and money.
0:54.8	Right out of the gate in verse two we get an idea of how he feels about it all.
0:58.8	Vanity of vanity is all is vanity, he says.
1:02.1	The word he uses for vanity here is heavily, which means
1:05.2	vapor or smoke, but it also carries the connotation of something that's hard to
1:10.2	grasp. He uses this word 38 times in this book so it's definitely part of his
1:15.1	overarching theme. Here are some of the things he learned through his observations.
1:19.1	He starts out addressing work. All hard work is eventually negated by death. You and I see this all
1:26.2	the time. Buildings decay, technology is outdated, and even our income is diminished by taxes.
1:31.7	It's just a reminder of the futility of work.
