0:07.0	The last time we were in David's story he had just won a lot of battles and brought
0:17.1	Mepheth Jonathan's one surviving son to live in his home. Today the King of the
0:22.3	Ammonites dies and he had been amicable
0:24.7	toward David so David decides to treat his son Hanun kindly in return.
0:29.2	Hanun is the likely heir to the throne and it's a wise diplomatic move on David's part to keep peace with his neighbors.
0:37.0	But a nun's advisors are suspicious. They mistrust David's motives because they don't know him.
0:42.0	They haven't seen how he's taken in
0:43.8	Mephibicheth or how he's mourned the death of his enemies or even how he
0:47.4	refused to kill Saul twice when he had the chance. They feel unnecessarily
0:52.4	threatened by him.
0:54.0	So they take David's servants who were sent to comfort Hennun and degrade them by shaving off half their
0:59.2	beards and cutting their clothes in half.
1:01.8	Both of these moves are emasculating for David's servants.
1:05.1	The beard is considered a mark of manhood, and to cut their garments in half is
1:10.8	symbolic of castration. It's something they do to prisoners of war to
1:14.8	shame them. These men who came to Henun to serve him are left half naked and
1:19.7	humiliated. David doesn't retaliate, but he's not happy with the Ammonites.
1:25.0	They get wind of it and decide to go on the offensive by hiring more than 30,000 mercenaries,
1:31.0	including a bunch of Syrians who already hated Israel, to fight Israel on their behalf.
1:36.2	David sends his army, led by Joab to the battle, and Joab demonstrates good leadership
1:41.5	and trust in God during all of this.
