| 0:17.4 | River and take the Promised Land to live in it. Moses has been giving laws for how things |
| 0:22.2 | will shift once they're no longer camping in the desert. |
| 0:25.0 | Today he starts out with some laws about worship. |
| 0:28.0 | He reminds them that they're entering into foreign territory where pagan gods are revered. |
| 0:32.0 | If anyone does worship those other gods, territory where pagan gods are revered. |
| 0:33.0 | If anyone does worship those other gods, there will be a trial involving at least two witnesses |
| 0:38.5 | before the death penalty is given. |
| 0:41.1 | And the witnesses are the ones who have to carry out that justice. |
| 0:44.0 | So if they're lying, then they'd be guilty of murder. |
| 0:47.0 | And because these situations can be complex and challenging sometimes, |
| 0:51.0 | God sets up a court of appeals made up of judges and priests to handle the more difficult matters. |
| 0:57.0 | Moses predicts that there will be a day after they settle in the land when they'll look around and be like, |
| 1:03.0 | hey, all these other nations have kings, we should get one of those. |
| 1:07.0 | When the time comes, God will choose an Israelite for them to set up as a king over them. |
| 1:12.0 | But it's important for their kings not to be drawn to wealth, power, or women. |
| 1:16.0 | If you know much about any Israelite kings, you already know this isn't going to end well. |
| 1:21.0 | The prohibition against these things |
| 1:23.4 | was supposed to keep them humble and trusting |
| 1:25.6 | in God for their provision and protection, |
| 1:27.8 | instead of in what they could acquire for themselves. |
