0:25.8	people toward a civil and just society that treats others with respect and honors life.

0:38.0	When it comes to the laws against theft, you may have noticed that for a lot of the scenarios
0:41.8	listed, the amount the thief has to pay back exceeds what he stole.
0:46.8	In many ways, these consequences may have served as a deterrent against sinning.
0:51.4	These laws may feel kind of intimidating if you're imagining yourself as the one who's
0:54.9	committing the sin.
0:55.9	But if you put yourself in the place of the one who sinned against, you'll be grateful

1:01.9	We also see how God protects the female virgins by threatening men who take advantage of them
1:06.0	with the penalty of several years worth of wages.
1:09.2	By the way, this isn't referring to rape, it's referring to a seduction that leads to
1:13.5	consensual sex.
1:15.5	Later, when we get to the Book of Deuteronomy, we'll see that the penalty for rape is death.
1:20.5	God also forbids charging interest on loans.
1:23.2	Most interest rates in those days started out at about 25%, but guess who borrows money?
