Summary

Great Britain is into a Davis Cup final for the first time since 1978, and the Tennis Podcast reviews a week in which Andy Murray shouldered his nation’s fortunes successfully, yet again. Telegraph Tennis Correspondent Simon Briggs joins Tennis Podcast presenters David Law (BBC Radio 5 Live) and Catherine Whitaker to talk about Murray’s exploits, carried out, as we discover on the show, with a bad back. Lleyton Hewitt’s glorious Davis Cup playing career also came to an end in Glasgow, and he reflects on 17 years at the top of the sport, while also paying tribute to Murray. Finally, Leon Smith talks exclusively to The Tennis Podcast and says that Dan Evans, Kyle Edmund and James Ward now have to ‘prove why I should pick you’ for the final against Belgium, in Belgium, 27-29 November.   Belgium are into their first final since 1904. The Tennis Podcast is produced in association with The Telegraph, and supported by BNP Paribas, the bank for a changing world.

into the Davis Cup by BMP PABAR final for the first time in 37 years 1978 was the year the Britain was last at that stage and they are joined by Belgium who have been away from the Davis Cup final from even longer.

0:45.9

In 1904 was the year that Belgium last were in the Davis Cup final. That was also again great Britain and so the final will be in Belgium in Gens 27th to the 29th of November.

My name is David Lawer. I'm joined here by the Telegraph's tennis correspondent Simon Briggs and Catherine Whitaker here on the tennis podcast brought to you in association with the Telegraph and supported by BMP PABAR the Bank for a Changing World.

1:13.9

Here they are dismantling the stadium as we talked to you just an hour after the semi-final in which Simon Briggs and he Murray did what we all expected he would do but there were none of the stressful moments that we had at the Queens Club in the reverse singles rubber he was on fire today.

1:31.9

We could do some sort of demolition pun couldn't we is that taking down the stadium and Murray certainly took Tom and it's a part Brick by Brick today and really there wasn't an awful lot of doubt it didn't feel from the first game onwards.

1:45.9

In fact he started with an ace. Second point was quite revealing because he went with a wide serve and a forehand into the corner. Tom and it shouldn't bother chasing him this was like well that's a bit good for me and that was kind of his whole attitude throughout the match.

1:57.9

It was a bit good for me I don't know if I like it very much and then he came in afterwards and he said I need to look at this and learn what I can do to get better which is what his team captain, Wally Miser said as well but yeah it was another schooling and really the meat of this match was a doubles rubber and I don't certainly

2:16.9

think Bernard had much belief once that had gone he pretty much admitted that really didn't he didn't have much belief that there was any way back.

2:24.9

And that is the problem isn't it Catherine because tennis wise Bernard Tom it played really well at points today certainly in the first set he was a times taking charge of the rallies but Andy Murray just kept on getting one more ball back and I thought he's basically broken the guys hearts he's broken his spirit he broke his he stopped in believing.

2:43.9

Yeah but as Simon points out his spirit looks to be broken on the second point that I don't think he came into the match with oodles of spirit only to have it it broken I think he came into the match running low on spirit and.

2:57.9

I think he came in low on self belief I just don't think he thought he could beat the guy.

3:01.9

Maybe but probably is only chance we would have been to try and run everything down and is complimentary is late in here it was about Bernard Tomic's performance I'm sure he wasn't watching him fail to chase

3:15.9

he's not in the image of late in here who's become sort of the archetypal Davis cop hero always answering the call always leaving 100% out there I just don't I mean yes of course it hinged on the doubles of course everybody knew it hinged on the doubles of course nobody was expecting Bernard Tomic to get a point there.

3:44.9

But you're still representing a country just put in everything you've got for that reason.

3:51.9

Yeah it's something that he probably at this point Simon has yet to really find out whether he's got within him I suspect Tomic does he have that insatiable desire to win it pretty much any cost which certainly laden here it has.

4:06.9

He's sort of like a memory you sort of language player isn't he and he quite likes to play cat and mouse which is actually quite a murriish characteristic they as Andy said afterwards they they share a certain amount of style and maybe that's why he doesn't find it easy

4:24.9

to be very understanding because it's he's used to people who can't handle his deafness and his changes of spin and his is slowing down of the game when he wants to do it because Andy just out slices him when it comes to that not many players in the world can do that.

4:37.9

He just didn't really have anywhere left to go you know Bernard he's a super talent he's really doing well on the rankings he's going to be top 20 next week for the first time.

4:49.9

He doesn't done his beaten in top five players since 2011 I think when he beat Soda Ling so that would be the next step for him and he's obviously going to have to and he's admitted it actually he said fitness is my big problem he's going to have to add a lot more strength and endurance if he's going to start beating top five players regularly.

5:07.9

It puts Great Britain into this final now against Belgium in late November in Belgium it's going to be interesting to see what they put it on Andy Murray was certainly suggesting that it was going to be on clay in Belgium in fact he he said that when they were not even level yet in the tie he was convinced Belgium would win and that's where it would end up.

5:27.9

I spoke to Leon Smith all the way back in the US open about you know just in case we get through I don't want to take anything granted what do you think they will do about of any of you so I shouldn't worry about it too much Belgium we're going to win that semi final I don't think we need to look too far ahead really and he was right you know the Belgians came through a tough for rubber there.
