My name is David Willits.

I'm the British Minister for Science and Universities.

I'm in Chicago attending the world's largest scientific conference, the conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science,

the Triple A S. There are over 8,000 people here and it's a great opportunity for me to talk to

as many people as possible about the science that we're doing in

Britain, how great it is, and also to learn what's going on around the world,

and particularly to try to get more cooperation. We're very good already at

cooperation, but trying to get even more cooperation. We're very good already at cooperation but trying to get even more

cooperation between our scientists in the UK and scientists in the US and elsewhere.

One of the things that I certainly hope to be pursuing all through my visit to Chicago

is what I've called the eight great technologies, eight areas of technology

where there are global opportunities, general purpose technologies which we are investing in in addition to the core

science budget to the tune of 600 million pounds. My first stop is here at the Alne National Laboratory on the outskirts of Chicago.
