Summary

In August of 1985, 19-year-old David Lovely and his family were moving from their home in California to Massachusetts. David’s mother and sister were driving the moving truck while David rode his maroon 1978 Model 1100 Yamaha motorcycle. Every 30 miles or so, the family would stop to check on one another. During one stop in Evanston, WY, David told his family he wanted to continue on and that he would meet up with them at the next rest stop. At some point, David stopped in Fort Bridger, WY and called his aunt from the Bingo Truck Stop to tell her that his motorcycle had broken down. He said another man, who also had a motorcycle, had helped him fix whatever the issue was. David asked to his aunt to relay this message to his family when they called her at their next stop. Sadly, this would be the last time David’s family would hear from him. Nine days later, his motorcycle was found by campers on a dirt road near Sweetwater County Airport in Rock Springs, WY, but there was no sign of David.

My sense has always been that, you know, something happened to him.

0:27.0

I don't think he abandoned his bike and took off our another life.

There are some people that are really independent and, you know, they could go off on their own tomorrow and be perfectly fine.

He was not that person. We were close and there's no way anybody could convince me that he would just take off and start a new life without reaching out.

0:47.0

I just don't believe it. I think something happened to him there.

You could write, you know, 20 different novels, making up different scenarios and endings.

But I guess the bottom line in my mind is that he just wasn't the kind of independent person that could get a whole new identity and go on his merry way.

1:05.0

There's really no reason that he would even want to. He certainly wasn't. He didn't have any kind of criminal record or anything like that.

1:12.0

He wasn't running from anybody. He was just kind of a naive kid, you know, really. I know he was 19, going 20, but some people just don't mature as quickly as others.

1:22.0

He was definitely one of my thoughts.
