| 0:30.5 | ...ourg... This is undaunted life a man's podcast. I'm your host Kyle Thompson. Let's get into it. David, Bill, welcome to the show. Welcome to the studio. Glad to be here, man. Yeah, yeah, you'll look like he came with bells on. But right from the beginning, David, we got to cover a few things here because I owe you a thank you. I owe you an explanation for why I'm mad at you and I also |
| 1:12.8 | owe you an apology. Okay. So yeah, we're going to go in that order. So there was mine in my own |
| 1:17.7 | business. Okay. 19 year old Kyle just got home for my freshman year at UCO. I'm in Lawton, |
| 1:23.7 | which is my hometown, and I need a job. And so my buddy had gotten a job at Hobby Lobby |
| 1:29.3 | there in Lawton because his mom knew some ladies that worked in the floral department or worked in fabric or whatever. They're like, hey, they need an extra guy to help put stuff together and all that. I'm like, cool, I'm in. So I go. I get the job. It's perfect and all that. But then they convinced me to do this job that sounded cool, it was called seasonal. |
| 1:46.0 | Yeah. |
| 1:46.3 | And so I'm thinking there's going to be some sort of like outdoor thing, like, you know, as part of this or whatever. But come to find out, I'm on the floor. Okay. And so two bad things about me being on the floor is number one, they would call for a, well, I'll get to that here in a second, because that's the thing I'm mad at you about. |
| 2:02.7 | But so thank you, first of all, because you gave me money that, that summer, because I was able to take girls on dates. One of those girls you just met was my wife. And so it worked out, worked out really well. So thank you very much for that. but now what I'm really frustrated about is there was something called a code one back in that time |
| 2:18.7 | and so what code one back in that time. |
| 2:22.9 | And so what code one meant is if you're on the floor doing something, you had to come to the front and help check people out, right? Right. Problem was is at that time, there were no scanners. |
| 2:28.5 | You had to beep everything in manually into the machine or whatever. And if you made one mistake, you had to call a manager, right? And I always got the gals that had 750 different pieces of like, you know, buttons or stuff or scrapbooks or anything like that. And so I always messed up, always had to call a manager. And that code one was like something that was burned into my brain. And also, the ladies that had the most obscure things they were trying to find, I mean, because there's only 74 trillion things in Hobby Lobby that you can buy. But ladies would never come up to me and ask me in July, like, hey, where are the Christmas trees? Because the answer would be everywhere. They're everywhere. Just go, just go find one and buy it. They would be like, I'm looking for an epoxy pore for a tabletop or I'm looking for a button for a Civil War-era doll. And I'm just like, oh, no, I have no idea where stuff is. But now we need to get to my apology. I know this is taking a minute. It's my last day at Hobby Lobby. I'm about to go back to school. I'm about to have to leave for my very last shift. And all I can think is code one, code one, code one, code one, Kyle, we need you to come to the front. We need you to help check people out and all that. I call my manager and I say, I'm not coming in today. And so I'm supposed to be there. There were people depending on me, David. And I just, I'm sorry. I've been like holding this burden all these years until this day. And so I'm very, very sorry that I did that to Hobby Lobby and Laude, Oklahoma. Well, I'm sorry it didn't work out quite as good as you should have, it should have been. So anyway. Yeah, that's my legacy, right? All because of Code 1. Yeah, all because of Code 1. And, like, I should have just grinned and buried. It wasn't the worst shop I ever had because I was selling coupon books door to door in a suit and tie in Oklahoma, you know, for a while there. And so I couldn't go to a mini mall for a while without having like a mini panic attack or whatever. But yeah, so my legacy with Hobby Lobby and Law in Oklahoma, |
| 4:18.1 | probably not great, didn't leave an indelible legacy. But that's really the reason we're here |
| 4:22.7 | talking to you guys today because you have a new book out. You got a copy there. And we'll show it here. |
| 4:26.2 | And guys, it is in the show notes. So it's called the legacy life leading your family to make a difference for |
| 4:31.1 | eternity. And so just kind of like 30,000 foot view to start. So obviously y'all are, you know, author, co-author. You kind of worked together on this particular thing. And we're going to dig into the specifics on the book here in just a second. But why this book? Why now? Why you two guys? Yeah, I think I'm going to let you answer that, Bill. |
