Welcome to The Treatment. I'm Elvis Mitchell. My guest, Dave Holstein, has made his bones mostly in comedy, but he got to start really as a playwright.

And we know his work, of course, from weeds and even some stuff on Nickelodeon.

But his newest show created for Jim Carrey is Kidding on Showtime, which by the time, this show will run.

The first episode will have aired and sitting across

again, I'm like that from Dave Holstein. First of all, Dave, thanks much for being here.

Of course, thanks for having me. And the show began as a screenplay, right?

It actually began as a pilot. Okay. And it came from sort of a desire to do something weird that wasn't on television.

You know, just to kind of write something for myself and to write something, oddly enough, for Jim Carrey, comma, movie star.

Who, you know, this was back in 2013, I wrote the first draft of this.

And the first line on the pilot was Jeff Pickles, comma, think Jim Carrey, and fondly remember the Truman Show.

And I don't know.

I had this crazy idea to just tailor something to the gym who was performing those dramatic roles, you know, Truman Show,

Man on the Moon, Eternal Sunshine.

And talk about your first conversation with Jim when you met with him about doing the show.

Oh, that was the end of a long journey and was a really exciting day because I was writing on

a show that Jim produced called him Dying Up Here for Showtime about comedy in the 70s.

Well, he got his start.

Yeah, where he got his start.

And obviously, again, another personal project for him.

And he pulled me out of the writer's room.

He had just read the script.
