I was seven when my grandmother died in El Salvador.

She had been a healer, a brouha, a woman chosen by blood and by spirit.

She heals with herbs, speaks with ancestors,

and learns early that not everything watching her comes from this world.

The kind of woman everyone feared and loved at the same time.

People came from all over for her help with fevers, broken bones,

and grief that you couldn't cure with medicine.

And I was with her when she died.
