Summary

Last year, Des Linden joined the CITIUS MAG Podcast just two days before she ended up winning the Boston Marathon. We decided to test our luck again and have another Hansons Brooks Distance Project runner on before Monday's race. Three-time U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein joins the podcast to discuss his approach to the race and how he's overcome a slew of injuries to make it to the starting line healthy. Dathan has not finished a marathon in four years. He finished seventh at the 2015 Boston Marathon and then DNF'ed at the U.S. Olympic Trials, ruptured his plantar at the 2016 NYC Marathon and pulled out of last year's Boston Marathon just 10 days before the race. He's working off an eight-week build up for this year's race, which should be interesting to see play out. We discuss his tiered goals for Monday, how he's changed his training, why Brooks took a risk on him, why he thinks he'll make the 2020 Olympic team and what he gets out of coaching... For a shorter conversation, I thought Dathan and I got deep. NOTE: We taped this at a sports bar in Boston after a Brooks press conference so apologies for the background noise.

All right, Dathan, so the reason we're doing this podcast is because a year ago, I was at

0:06.4

this Brooks press conference and there weren't too many media members that were there, and so I decided to tape a really short podcast with Des and she went on

0:16.2

to win the race so they decided to be like hey all right you know your good luck come

0:21.0

over talk to Dathan and maybe he'll win the race on Monday.

0:24.7

So, I'm glad you picked me instead of Shady then.

0:26.8

Right.

0:27.8

So preemptively, I'd like to congratulate you on winning the 2019 Boston Marathon.

0:31.5

Awesome.

0:33.0

This year, I mean I guess you haven't finished a marathon in four years.

0:38.0

Why is this going to be different?

0:39.0

Man, everybody keeps telling me that.

0:41.0

Man, that's like the punchline I guess yeah I guess so between

0:47.3

Boston 2015 and now it's been four years and I've I that race was pretty good off from an

0:56.0

abbreviated kind of build up and coaching myself kind of thing and but then yeah the

1:02.1

next two marathons did not go well the training was

1:05.2

pretty good for the trials in 2016 but I really to that was actually really painful but yeah that was a big mistake nevertheless and so

1:26.0

then the 2016 New York City I ruptured my planner and I was very very good shape but pushing the

1:35.6

envelope pretty good and yeah that was I was struggling just to get to the line

1:41.2

actually and so I was great until about 10 days

1:44.4

beforehand I was kind of managing it but I think I kind of tore it a little bit in

1:47.9

training about 10 days out and yeah it ruptured in the in the race and so it was you know taking the next year off for

1:57.0

marathoning was you know that was a tough decision but we thought it would be good to get a full year under my belt and so when I came in to
