When Rundyem C's Sucker M C's started spinning on small radio stations around New York

City in 1983, believe it or not, this was new school, the cutting edge.

Sucker M C's was the B side to Rundyem C's first single, it's like that.

These songs completely changed the sound of hip hop in the early 80s.

Their sparse, bass heavy beats and aggressive rhymes represented the real hip hop, her live

at block parties and clubs in the Bronx and Queens.

It was a huge leap forward from the first ever hip hop releases from groups like the Sugar

Hill gang and Grandmaster Flash in the Fierce Five, where we're putting out polished

R&B influenced records.

Joseph Rund Simmons, Jason Jam Master, Jay Maisel, and our guest today, Darryl DMC McDaniels

came together in 1983, not long before the release of those first two songs.

As R&B they helped define the look and sound of hip hop in the 80s worldwide.

Their true pioneers who've had no shortage of firsts in their career, including the

first ever hip hop group to go gold, then platinum, then multi-platinum.

They were also the first rappers on MTV and on the cover of Rolling Stone.

Rick Rubin and DMC have been friends since the early days of R&B.

When Rick founded Deaf Jam Records with runs older brother and produced two of the

group's classic albums, and of course their collaboration with Aerosmith walked this

way.

In this candid conversation between old friends, you'll hear how DMC and run formed the

group, and also how despite a career full of accolades, DMC struggled for years with suicidal

thoughts.
