In this episode, we look beyond the Enfield headlines to explore the extraordinary wider career of Guy Lyon Playfair, the Cambridge-educated journalist and psychical researcher most famously associated with the Enfield poltergeist. However, long before Enfield, Playfair was immersed in some of the most violent and disturbing poltergeist cases ever recorded during his investigations in Brazil in the early 1970s, where first hand encounters with rapping sounds, flying objects, spontaneous fires and physical attacks transformed him from skeptic to investigator. Today we look at two terrifying cases, and argue that history has unfairly reduced Playfair to a single case, overlooking a career spent confronting some of the darkest and most compelling mysteries in modern paranormal research.
