There's a story that's traditionally told about the history of Britain from the end of the Roman period in the early 5th century

through to the arrival of the Vikings at the end of the 8th century. And it's a story of

coalescing kingdoms that led inexorably towards the rise of Wessex as the last man standing.

However, according to Thomas Williams, the author of a new book on the era,
