Summary

Darcy noticed she was becoming increasingly reliant on alcohol to relax after her twin boys were born. Then came the double trauma of a miscarriage followed by a devastating decision to end another ill-fated pregnancy.  Darcy tried to push through her emotions, carrying on with her job and meeting the demands of parenting her young sons. She began using alcohol to cope, and the progression took off. She began to question her own value and when she wondered if her family might be better off without her, she knew it was time to ask for help. After some time of being alcohol-free, as well as a joyfully successful pregnancy, Darcy contemplated moderation and found that her drinking returned to previous patterns. It was alarming and quick. Soon she was back in care and determined to do whatever it might take to be free of the hold that alcohol had over her. * Host Jean McCarthy's blog is UnPickled and her lastest books are available via www.jeanmccarthy.ca/books

I own it, I did that, not proud, but that was me, and when I face it, I take back a little dignity, not looking for excuses, I just want to be free from power.

bubble hour. Hi, Jean. Wonderful to be here. I'm glad you're here. We went through quite the little

rigmarole of technical hiccups. And with neither one of us being technical wizards, we made it through. So we've

1:21.0

already accomplished something today. Yes. We're off to a good start here. Yes. We bonded. It was like a bonding exercise at the start of a convention or something where you sit with a stranger and solve a problem before you do anything else. So there we are.

Yes.

1:39.1

So thank you for being here. I'm going to turn the mic over to you, Darcy. Tell us about yourself and tell us your story.

1:45.6

Okay. Thank you so much. Well, just to start with, I just want to say it's an absolute honor and very

1:53.1

almost surreal to be here talking with you right now. The bubble hour holds a very near and dear place in my heart in that I was able,

2:05.3

fortunate enough to get sober September 24th, 2019, so almost 15 months ago.

2:12.0

And leading up to that day, especially the last few months when I was really, really struggling, the bubble

hour was a safe place for me to go to turn. And it provided me with so much hope in that I didn't

2:32.8

know how I was going to get sober, but I knew that I could.

2:37.2

And listening to the stories that are shared here, you know, people would say all the time,

2:42.5

well, if I can do it, then you could do it.

2:44.9

And I believed that.
