We finished off the sporting calendar late last night with a game between the Florida Gators and the Virginia Cavaliers. I stayed up for it because I'm somewhat curious to see how Dan Mullin was going to have his team ready for this game.

1:32.3

I knew Virginia would be excited because they aren't in these big games that often, but I was curious to see how Dan Mullins team matched that enthusiasm and intensity.

1:42.8

And also a part of me ever since Alex Marvez brought this up on the show last week has wondered whether Dan Mullin could find himself involved in the Dallas Cowboy coaching sweepstakes.

1:55.0

And that to me is the story that is probably the most intriguing as we began the final day of the 2019 calendar year.

2:05.3

What in the world is going to happen in Jerry world? How are the Cowboys going to come to a conclusion with Jason Garrett and what coaches will they consider if they decide to ultimately part ways with him.

2:21.4

And a part of me is now wondering, could we find ourselves in an NFL version of what happened with Southern Cal and their decision with Clay Helton?

2:32.5

Let me explain why I bring that up as a potential possibility. If you follow coaching searches in general, you understand that before a school or a team contacts a coach, they get an early indication of interest.

2:54.2

You reach out behind the scenes and say, Hey, would your guy be interested in interviewing in this job search? And that's not a, Hey, do you want this job? How much money would it cost for you to be able to be able or willing to consider this job?

3:12.5

Just a straight forward. Would you be interested in this job if it were to come open? And what happened to USC was, I believe, a lot of big name targets effectively said thanks, but no thanks when the USC job came open.

3:30.8

And I wonder right now whether we might be dealing with the same kind of situation with the Dallas Cowboys, whether behind the scenes, Jerry Jones and his people are reaching out to some of the targets they would most like to replace Jason Garrett with.

3:46.7

And a lot of those top targets who would have interest from a variety of different places and probably already have pretty good jobs are saying to Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys, thanks, but no thanks.

3:59.1

And the end result with that conversation, thanks, but no thanks with USC was Clay, helping ended up keeping his job. Is it possible that because of the difficulties inherent in the Dallas Cowboys job in particular, the fact that you've got Jerry Jones having post game conferences. He's commenting all the time.

4:20.2

This is a job unlike any other in the NFL because there is no other owner in the professional football like Jerry Jones. Some guys might decide they don't need the bright lights and the owner looking over their shoulder perpetually making comments all the time.

4:39.0

And so as a result, Jerry Jones and his brain trust might be sitting around having their conversations with Jason Garrett without a lot of other really good options out there because I do believe if Jerry Jones fires Jason Garrett, he needs to be able to replace him with a coach that immediately unites and excites the Dallas Cowboy fan base.

5:02.4

And those coaches, whether it's a guy like Dan Mullin, whether it's Matt Roolett Baylor, whether it's Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma.
