Hi, everyone. As we know, Dana's traveling this weekend. She'll be back Tuesday morning. And we had some late breaking news that I was able to get into the show today from the New York Times about documents.

1:54.0

The Department of Justice feels like Trump hasn't returned to them all, which is kind of surprising, but also not. I'll get into that a little bit. And later in the show, I'm going to be interviewing the author of the book, Hashtag Alt-Gov. That's Amanda Sturgell.

2:07.0

It's a really fascinating conversation about all those Alt-Government accounts that were on Twitter after the Trump administration after Trump took office.

2:16.0

And don't forget Monday, we're going to have almost an hour long interview with Michael Cohen. He's the host of the May a culpapod cast and Trump's former fixer and lawyer who, you know, played guilty and spent time in prison for a conspiracy with individual one who never faced charges.

2:31.0

So we have a lot of news to get to today. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes.

2:36.0

So many major breaking stories today. It's hard to know where to start. So I'm going to start with Dank Brandon. Here's a statement from the White House. As I often said, during my campaign for president, no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana.

2:51.0

Sending people to prison for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives and incarcerated people for conduct that many states no longer prohibit. Criminal records for marijuana possessions have also imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities.

3:06.0

And while white and black and brown people use marijuana at similar rates, black and brown people have been arrested, prosecuted, and convicted at disproportionate rates.

3:15.0

Today, I am announcing three steps that I'm taking to end this failed approach. First, I'm announcing a pardon for all prior federal offense of simple possession of marijuana.

3:25.0

I have directed the attorney general to develop an administrative process for the issuance of certificates of pardon to eligible individuals. There are thousands of people who have been prior federal convex for marijuana possession, who may be denied employment, housing or educational opportunities as a result.

3:40.0

My action will help relieve the collateral consequences arising from these convictions. Second, I am urging all governors to do the same with regard to state offenses, just as no one should be in federal prison solely due to the possession of marijuana.

3:53.0

No one should be in a local jail or state prison for that reason, either. Third, I am asking the secretary of health and human services and the attorney general to initiate the administrative process to review expeditiously how marijuana is scheduled under federal law.

4:09.0

Federal law currently classifies marijuana in schedule one of the controlled substances act. The classification meant for the most dangerous substances. This is the same schedule as for heroin and LSD and even higher than the classification of fentanyl and higher than methamphetamine.

4:25.0

The drugs that are driving our overdose epidemic.

4:29.0

Finally, even as federal and state regulation of marijuana changes important limitations on trafficking, marketing and underage sales should stay in place. Too many lives have been upended because our failed approach to marijuana. It's time that we write these wrongs.

4:43.0

I was a big pot smoker ever, but I remember writing a paper in high school about the racist criminalization of weed and how autocrats were targeting black and brown communities to suppress the vote. The paper was called just say no, KNOW, wink wink.
