Summary
Dan Turner is a 40-something Australian with extremely high ambitions for himself. When he was just a teenager, he wrote a list of bucket-list items that he wanted to accomplish during his life — things like ultra-running and becoming a martial arts champion. In a quite short time, Dan completed every last one of them — except sailing around the world. We met in Nuku Hiva and I talked to Dan onboard FALKEN about his attempt to circumnavigate in a 19-ft, homebuilt boat and complete that bucket list.

| 0:00.0 | It started with a marathon and then my mate, you know, he picked a race, he picked a harder one, |
| 0:04.8 | I picked a harder one and we sort of escalated and escalated to a point. We're like, we need to finish this. And then I was just like Googling what's the hardest race in the world? All right, ask me again. How does it feel to be home? It feels so good. I've been gone for two months. This is the longest I've ever been gone since Axel was born. And just like walking through the tunnel when we had our bags and I knew you and Axel were out there waiting for us. And I said to myself, like when we were just about to come out, I was like, stay in the moment. This is going to be a really special moment. And I walk out |
| 0:37.9 | and Axel's there and he was like, looked all shy for a second. And then I put my arms out and I said, hey, buddy, come here. And he ran to me with his arms open and jumped up and was petting my face. And it was just like the most magic moment ever. And I imagine it's what it's, you know, what sailors for centuries have been feeling when they come home to their families. |
| 0:54.9 | And to me, |
| 0:56.1 | it's, |
| 0:56.2 | it's worth it. |
| 0:56.9 | It's worth it. |
| 0:57.6 | I mean, |
| 0:57.9 | it's, |
| 0:58.0 | it's, you know, what sailors for centuries have been feeling when they come home to their families. |
| 0:54.8 | And to me, it's, it's worth it. I mean, it's, it's hard to be gone, but it's so good to be home. And it's so nice to break that routine and stuff. And I, I'm delighted to be home. It's the long answer to your question. It's very nice to have you home. Yeah. It's fine. It's super to have the family back together. |
| 1:11.3 | It's really cool. |
| 1:12.1 | We're basically going to have the family back together. |
| 1:11.3 | It's really cool. We're basically going to get Spica next week. I told Axel we're going to go down together and help to get the boat ready. And then me and Pappy, Axel's grandfather, my dad, are going to move Spica up to the summer marina. And yeah, I'm very much looking forward to the first time we've had a whole summer together in Sweden. |
| 1:28.2 | Yeah. |
| 1:28.8 | So give me a highlight. |
| 1:30.1 | What comes to mind? A highlight of our trip. Yeah. Like, just something that popped into your mind. It was hot. I keep saying that. It was the hottest I think I've ever been on the boat. But it was really, I mean, I'm only home for two days. So I haven't properly reflected yet, but Tumotus and |
| 1:46.7 | Tahiti were incredible, like way better and way cooler than I expected. The Marquesas feels like, |
| 1:53.7 | literally feels like the end of the earth. Like there's just, the islands are just Jurassic Park |
| 1:58.5 | esk with the jungles and the mountains and, you know, there's not a lot of civilization there. The mantaray is swimming around the boat. We saw a whale shark on the crossing. Like, I was sitting on the side of the boat with my legs hanging overboard, eating pistachios. And, like, all of a sudden, there's a fin sticking up out of the water right next to the boat. And it, you know, my brain didn't quite |
| 2:17.5 | register for a second. And I was like, oh my God, it's a whale shark. And like, that was one of |
| 2:20.7 | the coolest things I'd seen. So it's going to take me some time to process this and go through the photos and stuff. But it was a, you know, I might never get back to that part of the world again. and it was truly incredible. |
