Sheila Hancock has been working in the British theatre since the 1950s. A publican's daughter

from working class roots, she won a scholarship to Rada and then worked her way through

repertory theatre in the regions to become a leading lady

at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

She's also had a hugely successful television career.

With leads in The Rag Trade and Mr. Digby Darling, she's been married twice.

We'll talk more about her marriages.

Her second one was to the actor John Thor, of course, famous for playing Inspector Morse.

I first saw Sheila on stage in the 1950s at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in a show called Make Me an Offer.

And I was so struck by her and the play that I actually wrote off to Wolf Magnovitz,

who wrote it, well, just a fan letter, and he sent back a copy of the script, which I still treasure.

I then got to know Sheila through doing the radio program just a minute,

and she was always so brilliant on that, such fun.

But we've become quite close in recent years
