It's the third dam though.

We are at the Eda Dam, which you can see behind us.

And if you look closely, you can see where they had to patch it.

Because that sort of cleaner bit, where it's not all dark, that's where the breach in the dam was.

Yep.

Slightly off centre, but understandable, given the great big bloody hill over there.

It's absolutely amazing isn't it? It's just... it is remarkable.

Anyway, we're going to go up onto the dam, we're going to talk about the raid

and how they had to come in over the water to strike at the third dam of Operation Chastise.

What strikes you is the enormity of this construction.

I mean, it is absolutely huge and when one thinks that this was completed in, you know, on the eve of the First World War,

it's an astonishing achievement.

You can hear the water lapping against the edge of the dam wall here, just below us.

And it's probably amazing to think that, you know, on that night,

Lancaster's were kind of cruelling around and trying to destroy this with a bouncing bomb.

I mean, the thing that strikes me every time I've been here is just how incredibly difficult it must have been to fly it.

Well, although, you know, the pros of attacking this dam is it's undefended.
