Grahamstown South Africa and as we do, let's see what was going on in the world at that time.

In South Africa in 1886, it was a significant time in their history. The town of Johannesburg

sprung from a camp where the main gold reef on the Whitewater Rand was found. In fact, due to that, the Standard Bank of

South Africa opened its first bank that same year. The railway lines opened and the first of three well-taint

condensing locomotives were built and used by the Cape Copper Mining Company.

They were the first steam locomotives in South Africa.

Soon after this time, the Second Boer War began, this war was fought between the British

Empire and the two Boer states, South African Republic, and the Orange Free State. The Boers being well armed and ready for

battles struck first. The British brought in many many soldiers and fought back and they were able to seize control.

The Union of South Africa was formed a few years later from the four colonies
