The sad news this week of the death at 83 of John Hume, the

Nobel Peace Prize winner and Giant of Northern Irish politics brought back many

memories for everyone who like like me, can remember his pivotal role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland.

And it put many of today's politicians into sharp and unforgiving relief.

Quite simply, he was no less than the father of the Northern

Ireland peace process. A founding member of the moderate nationalist SLP and a key civil rights campaigner John Hume laid the groundwork for the peace process by taking part in talks with Sinn Féin in the late 1980s.

He played a major role in the process and his work culminated, of course in the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, which largely ended decades of sectarian violence.
