to the Lord, for he has torn us that he may heal us. Not life, but he has torn us,

that he may heal us. He has struck us down and he will bind us up. If you want things to be more hopeful, you must understand that sorrow and brokenness and contrition over

sin and suffering, it is the backdrop for hope.

I just don't understand how people might say,

I'm hoping that the preacher would give me something that is hopeful today.

Well, what is it that would be hopeful?

Christ's return?

Salvation?

But all of these things assume that you were once under the wrath of God.

They assume that the wages of sin is death.

They assume that the world actually needs to be restored because it is presently groaning

under the weight of sin and suffering, ravaged and decaying,

and that you too are decaying.
