Now according to verse four, these different doctrines were the product of fruitless speculations

about myths and endless genealogies.

These men portrayed themselves as knowledgeable in order to accumulate a following.

But their knowledge was nothing more than mere foolishness.

The apostle refers to their teaching as speculation in verse four, but then goes on to say that they make confident assertion at the end of verse seven.

It is quite possible, brothers and sisters, to sound biblical and to speak confidently but to actually be

dead wrong we must exercise caution with those who display incredible confidence regarding

their own extra biblical speculations,

especially, and notice the hypocrisy,

but it is an epidemic.

It is uncanny how these two things always seem to come together.

Two peas and a paw,

an unstoppable correlation, if you will. Those who display

incredible confidence regarding their speculations, that is, those peripheral ideas, those different doctrines, those truths on the margins,

that there is much debate whether or not they're in fact true at all, those who are so

confident in their assertions about peripheral speculative myths and genealogies.
