1990, the biggest cultural shock and by a long way, the thing that almost made me pack up and move back, was seeing cardboard city.

I had never experienced homelessness at this scale.

It seemed unfathomable that people in such large numbers would be so completely abandoned by state and family.

Almost two decades later I experienced a year of homelessness myself and the system which creates the conditions

for it came into crystal clear focus.

That Britain is experiencing a housing crisis is something I have heard for three decades and yet government

after government whatever their market ideology and however good their intentions

have failed to address it. I hope that my guests today can at least point us in the right direction.
