In the news this morning, a Philadelphia pizza shop employee shot an armed robbery suspect who had just targeted nearby pharmacy minutes earlier.

Police say the series of incidents unfolded at about 930 last night when three men robbed the CVS pharmacy at North Broad and Spring Garden in the Spring Garden section of the city.

Moments later, at least one of the men went a block away to rob the pizza shop at 15th in Spring Garden. However, once inside, an employee of the pizza shop shot the would-be robber in the face, officers responded to that shooting and say that it was clearly a robbery. In addition to a large amount of blood, there was money and broken glass on the floor of the store. Investigators say they followed the trail of blood down the stairs of a septa subway station at Broad and Spring Garden.

Police say that's where they found the 33-year-old male suspect.

The suspect was rushed to an area hospital where he was placed in critical condition.

According to police, surveillance video from the pharmacy matched the description of the injured suspect.

The man has not yet been identified.

No other injuries were

reported. Philadelphia police major crimes say carjackings are happening daily and the majority of

offenders are juveniles. The city of Philadelphia is seeing at least an 80% increase in carjackings

in 2021 compared to the total number in 2020, police say. Captain John Ryan with the Philadelphia

Police Department's major crimes unit says on Wednesday night alone, there were eight carjackings

across the city. Police say one car was stolen and during the attempted theft of a second car,

the owner confronted the thief and was shot once. With more than 600 carjacking citywide in

2021, Captain Ryan says about 75 to 80% of those

arrested four carjackings are juveniles, some as young as 13 and 14 years old, he says.

They don't even have their licenses.
