Good morning in the news this morning. The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide reached 40 million Monday morning, according to a tally from John Hopkins University. The grim new milestone comes as some countries and the United States are trying more targeted measures to address the recent surges and cases, especially in Europe and the Americas. In the United States, new outbreaks are sending the nation towards a third wave, the NBC News reports.

Specifically, 38 states, Washington, D.C. and Guam all recorded increases in cases over the last 14 days,
