Good morning in the news this morning. The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide reached 40 million Monday morning, according to a tally from John Hopkins University. The grim new milestone comes as some countries and the United States are trying more targeted measures to address the recent surges and cases, especially in Europe and the Americas. In the United States, new outbreaks are sending the nation towards a third wave, the NBC News reports.

Specifically, 38 states, Washington, D.C. and Guam all recorded increases in cases over the last 14 days,

and nine states have plateaued, according to the NBC News tallies. Texas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S.

Virgin Islands are the only places without increases in cases.

Pennsylvania is reporting 1,857 new COVID-19 cases, the second highest daily total since the beginning of the pandemic,

days after officials said the Commonwealth was seeing a fall resurgence of the coronavirus.

The numbers announced Saturday by the State Health Department are exceeded only by the 1,9

89 cases reported on April 9th and bring the statewide total to almost 181,000 cases.

Nine new deaths were reported bringing the total number of deaths associated with the virus

to 8,466 in the state of Pennsylvania.

The state's health secretary, Dr. Rachel Levine, said that there are no plans to reimpose a state home order or shut down businesses.

She says Pennsylvania is more prepared for such an influx than it was in the spring.

The 26-year-old brother of rapper Fetty Wop was shot and killed in New Jersey.

The rapper posted a tribute to his Instagram story on Sunday morning.

I love you, really missing you, kid, but I see you brought the sun out today.
