Target is closing its Washington Square store in Center City, Philadelphia.

The store on the 1,100 block of Chestnut Street will close for good on May 13th. A Target spokesperson says that they are taking the action after multiple years of working to improve performance.

To the guests who shopped with us at Washington Square, we appreciate you shopping with us, and we hope that you'll continue to visit us at another location close to you or via target.com and the Target app, the spokesperson said in a statement. Did you light some vote of candles after hearing this? I did. I don't know this store, though. Is it one of those big stores or is it the smaller store? I think it's a smaller one, right? It's a smaller one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The shutdown follows the closure of several other high-profile stores in the area, including Wawa. It has residents concerned about the state of shopping in their neighborhood. But as of November of 2022, 80% of storefronts are occupied, which is up from 45% during the height of the pandemic in the summer of 2020.

It's also nearing the 89% occupancy it was before the pandemic.

The majority of storefronts are currently occupied by independent or local retailers and restaurants.

The Center City District said in their retail report that many national chain retailers closed stores across the country

due to the trends accelerated by the pandemic. The Target store first opened in 2016 and employees

roughly 45 full and part-time employees. Okay, so 45 employees. Those team members are being

offered the opportunity to work at other nearby locations. That's good. A woman died on Tuesday night after she was struck by two vehicles, including a hit-and-run driver,

according to Philadelphia Police.

It happened around 818 at the intersection of 49th in Lancaster Avenue.

Police say the 58-year-old woman was trying to cross the street when she was struck by a vehicle.

The driver of that second vehicle remained at the scene. Police say the driver of the

Mitsubishi crashed near the 2000 block of Belmont Avenue and took off. No arrests have been made
