with the transactions, injuries, news and notes from around the league, kicking things off

with the bad news as first baseman Wilson Contreras was placed on the 10-day IL with a shoulder

strain. At this point in the season, pretty much any IL placement is season ending. So we're

unlikely to see Wilson Contreras return to the Cardinals this season.

Nolan Gorman and Alec Berluson will see more time at first base for the Cardinals in Contreras's absence.

And in a corresponding move, Jose Fermin was recalled from the minors.

Our other aisle placement involves starting pitcher Jose Cantana, who was placed on the 15-day

IL with a calf strain.

Kentana will be out for the season, but he is on track to be able to return for the postseason.

In a corresponding move, Nick Mears was activated from the 15-day IL after missing time with back

tightness and Mears will rejoin the late-inning crew for the Brewers.

And to replace Kintana in the rotation, it's likely that Chad Patrick re-enters the rotation

after shifting to the bullpen with a spot open now in the rotation.

Patrick is the most likely option to get another shot in the rotation.
