Grant us your servants, O Lord God, we beseech you

to enjoy lasting health of mind and body.

And by the intercession of the glorious and blessed Virgin Mary,

may we be delivered from present sorrow and partake to the full of eternal happiness.

Today is also the historic feast of the finding of the true cross.

It was the year 326.

The Roman Empire had just embraced Christianity under Constantine the Great.

His mother, Helen, well into her 70s, wasn't content with the palace prayers and the royal

processions. She wanted to go to the source, to Jerusalem, to honor the places where Jesus had

walked, suffered, and risen. But she didn't stop there. Helen had a fire in her heart to find the actual

cross on which Christ was crucified. Not easy, especially since the Romans had buried the whole area

under rubble, even building a temple to Venus over the tomb. Helen ordered the pagan temples torn down,

and after clearing away the debris, not her herself.

But they found what they had hoped for, three crosses, nails, and the board that once hung over

Jesus' head, Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews, written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
