filled Blessed John with the heavenly learning and wondrous strength of soul,

most of his life tucked away in a monastery and still managed to become one of the

great voices of the early church. That's St. John Damascene, or St. John of Damascus. He was born

in Damascus under Muslim rule and actually worked in the Arab government following his father's

footsteps. But a few years later, he gave it all up and joined the monastery of St. Sabas near

Jerusalem, where he would spend the rest of St. Sabas near Jerusalem,

where he would spend the rest of his life in prayer, study, and writing.

Now, John is known for three big contributions.
