Mass, let the power of the Holy Spirit be present within us, O Lord, graciously to cleanse our hearts,

as well as to guard us from all harm.

Today let's also talk about Saint Margaret of Scotland, a queen, a mother, a reformer, and a

saint whose soul shown as brightly as the name she bore.

Margaret means pearl, and according to her confessor, that's exactly what she was, rare,

pure, and radiant.

Born a princess in England, Margaret fled to Scotland after the Norman conquest,

and married King Malcolm III in 1070.

Now, royal courts don't usually lend themselves to holiness,

but Margaret was also no ordinary queen.

She was known for her deep prayer life, her wisdom,

and her love for both God and her people. She didn't just pray. She acted. She built churches

and monasteries, brought dignity and order to the church in Scotland, and reformed the country's

laws to better reflect Christian values.

And she also didn't do it alone.

Her piety and her patience actually converted her husband.

King Malcolm adored her.
