St. John of Matho was born to serve. Even as a child, he found joy in helping the poor,

often telling them that he had come into the world for one purpose, to wash their feet.

That heart of service never left him. He studied in Paris, excelling so much that his teachers

urged him to become a priest. He gave up his noble status, knowing that he could do more for others

in God's service. At his first mass, something extraordinary happened. He saw an angel dressed in white, bearing a red and blue cross on his chest,
