Born in Thessalonica, around the year 346, St. Porphyrius had every advantage, a wealthy family, and a fine education.

But worldly success did not interest him. At 25, he left everything behind to pursue a life of prayer in the Nitrian

desert of Egypt under the guidance of St. Macarius the Great. There, he encountered St. Jerome,

who was traveling through the monasteries. Their paths would cross again later. Seeking greater

solitude, Porfarius later moved to a cave near the Jordan River, dedicating himself entirely

to asceticism and prayer.

After five years, he fell seriously ill. His legs weakened to the point where he could barely stand,

hoping for healing he made his way to Jerusalem. And there, lying near the foot of Golgotha,

he fell into a trance and had a vision of Christ descending from the cross, saying,

take this wood and preserve it. When he awoke, he found himself completely healed. In gratitude,

he gave away all his wealth to the poor and to the churches. He lived humbly, working as a shoemaker

for a time. At the age of 45, his life took a dramatic turn. The patriarch of Jerusalem

ordained him a priest and entrusted him with the sacred duty of guarding the venerable wood
