Intel has confirmed plans to build a semiconductor plant in Germany as part of an investment of up to 88 billion dollars in Europe over the next decade.

The initial outlay for the facility in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Analt, is 19 billion dollars.

The so-called mega site will actually comprise two factories.

Planning will start right away with construction expected to get underway in the first half of

next year, as long as Intel gets the thumbs up from the European Commission.

In other news, Facebook's parent company Meta has been fined $18.6 million by the Irish Data Protection Commission, DPC, over a string of historical

data breaches.

The security lapses in question, which appear to have affected up to 30 million Facebook

users, date back several years and had been disclosed by

Facebook to the Irish regulator in 2018.

The DPC, which is Meta slash Facebook's lead privacy regulator in the European Union opened this security-related inquiry

in late 2018 after it received no less than 12 data breach notifications from the Tech
