Today, the manufacturing PMI was reported in the U.S.

And it came in at 39.8 just shy of expectations.

A PMI below 50 means that economic activity was lower than last month.

So this 39.8 reading indicates that U.S. manufacturing is still in contraction.

This, as the S&P, continues to perch comfortably above the 3,000 level.

Meanwhile, China's PMIs were more hopeful.

The manufacturing PMI coming in at 50.6, which was below expectations,

while its composite came in at 53.4. China was the Canary of the coal mine,

when the shocking drop of its PMIs in late February put the world on notice.
