He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on Day 2 at LaBaseburg and the holding of

Little Roundtop. Situated on the Union's far left flank, Chamberlain's regiment, the 20th main

volunteers, reduced to less than

400 men, faced elements of several full core of Confederates.

After withstanding six determined uphill charges over the course of the day and almost out

of ammunition, Chamberlain ordered his men to fix bayonets and charge out of cover and down the hill

and into the Confederate lines. They ended up taking more prisoners from four separate regiments

than they had surviving soldiers to watch them. And many of the 20th Main were guarding their

prisoners with empty muskets.

Sound amazing, and that was only one engagement of one day of the three-day campaign of Gettysburg.
