Summary

Can you keep business safe from hackers? Many companies now feel besieged by constant attacks and few can claim not to have been targeted. In the first of a new series of the award-winning The Bottom Line Evan Davis and guests discuss the anatomy of a cyber attack - where the threats are coming from and how best to respond. high-profile cases recently. The giant US retailer Target had payment card details of 70 million

customers stolen back in December, a reminder of the potential scale of a single attack.

Well, my three guests today can tell us all about the consequences and potential cures.

They're all involved in trying to protect company secrets and personal data.

And let's start by taking a few minutes to meet each of them.

And first, Rashmi Knowles is chief security architect at

RSA, the security division of EMC. Rashmi, you can explain what RSA do better than me, but

people will associate it with those little secure ID tokens which companies give to their staff

to log into the system. So RSA are a security company and we are known for those tokens.

And a token is effectively a tool that allows you to securely connect to a site.

So rather than just using a password, it generates a random number that authenticate who you are

and allows you to connect to a site. A lot of corporates use it, a lot of consumer banking use it.

So that's kind of most of our

business, but we also do other security solutions. And who are your clients? We work with everyone

from small and medium businesses to governments, to defence companies. Obviously, the

higher end of the scale, financial institutions and government bodies, defence organisations,

tend to be the ones who invest a lot more. So we do a lot more with them. Now, your company

was hacked, which is obviously very ironic because you're in the security business, but it was

quite a high profile case. Just tell us a little about what happened. It was probably about two years
