Hello friend, and welcome to the naked scientist, the show where we bring you the latest breakthroughs in science, technology

and medicine. I'm Will Tingle. This week I'm fighting off all kinds of viruses to look at

cyber attacks. Off the back of the cyber attacks on the British library and our own Cambridge University,

we'll be taking a look at the world of cyber attacks from the state level down to the individual.

How do they happen? Who is responsible and how can we protect against them.

From Cambridge University's Institute of Continuing Education,

this is the Naked Scientists. Now you don't have to look very far to find victims of cyber attacks with the British Library still reeling from a large scale

hack by a shadowy group in the autumn of last year. A number of higher education institutions

in the UK, including here in Cambridge, were recently hit by a malicious cyber attack too.

But where exactly do they come from?

I've been speaking to the University of Oxford's Kiran Martin.

Kiran has been described as a cyber security ace and helped set up the National

Cybersecurity Center here in the UK.
