Summary

The story of the Titans, the first race of gods in Greek mythology, and the war between those Titans and the new race of gods, the Olympians.

CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing.

Sources: Hesiod's Theogony, translations by Hugh Evelyn-White and Richard Lattimore; Apollodorus' Library of Greek Mythology, translated by Robin Hard; various Titan/Titaness entries on Theoi.com.

Oh hi, hello, welcome, this is Let's Talk About Myths Baby, and I am your host, Liv.

0:40.8

As I mentioned last week, today we are diving into the epic story of the titanomaki,

0:46.6

the war of the titans.

0:48.6

But not just that, along with the war itself, we're going to cover as much about the actual

0:53.3

They're fascinating overall, given the general understanding of them is that they

1:05.6

did rule at one point, were overthrown by Zeus and his siblings, along with a couple

1:10.4

of the titans themselves, and then were relegated to various forms of lesser importance,

1:16.8

some locked away, others just lesser gods, than they've once been considered.

1:22.2

At the same time, did the ancient Greeks themselves believe at any point that they were

1:26.6

ruled by Chronos as a king of the gods, or did they always understand it as something

1:31.3

that took place in the past, before humanity?

1:34.3

There's probably scholarship about this, but it's just something I've thought about

1:37.8

in the moment, frankly, so I haven't dug into it.

1:42.6

But before we get into the titans as gods, before the gods, some fun news about some

1:47.8

upcoming episodes.

1:49.3

As I've mentioned, this coming Friday won't be another Argonautica quite yet, but instead

1:53.9

a conversation with Jennifer St. author of the upcoming novel Ariadne, as you might

1:59.8

imagine, it's about Ariadne.

2:01.9

It's an amazing retelling, and we have a great conversation about the book and mythology
