Summary

What if I told you that there was a pilot program that reduced inmate violence, increased cooperation and good behavior, and seemed to genuinely transform prisoners into more caring and responsible individuals -- and not in ten or twenty percent of the test subjects, but rather in the low to mid NINETY percent range? What if I told you it cost taxpayers nothing and incentivized the incarcerated to work harder to pay the minimal costs? And what if all that was true, and it was working right now? Cats for convicts. Yes, I said it, Cats for Convicts. Hi, I'm Scott out with Bill Whittle and Stephen Green, and this episode of Right Angle is brought to you by the members at Bill Whittle.com. And gentlemen, this is about as close as any episode in the last 12 or 13 years of Right Angle is going to get to being a cute kitten video. So make sure we get that in the headline and on the thumbnail image.

I saw a little clip, probably 30 seconds long, of one of those sort of TikTok-style videos. It may

0:31.1

have been on YouTube or Facebook. I'm not sure which of the profile of the social media platforms,

0:35.6

but it was just this little brief clip saying that at some

0:41.6

prison inmates were allowed to earn the right to keep cats they could have a cat and if you know

0:51.1

as long as they were during good behavior,

0:54.2

and the inmates, it actually found that they worked harder,

0:58.2

they studied harder, they saved up money

1:00.2

so that they could buy like cat toys

1:03.2

and various other cat related gear.

1:06.3

There are some statistics here, Stephen Green

1:08.9

that I'll share with you here. They did a study, and this,

1:12.3

I did not realize this. This is me just waking up in a brand new world every day. Back in 2006,

1:18.2

long time ago, they did a study of 159 prisons in 36 states, all of which had some sort of

1:24.9

prison-based animal program. And here's what they found. A hundred percent

1:29.4

of those prisons reported reduced inmate stress levels, 97 percent increased inmate relationships

1:37.9

and trust skills, 93 percent increased inmate self-control. Eighty-nine percent said the program humanizes and calms the facility.

1:47.0

85% recorded an increased work ethic among the inmates,

1:51.7

and 80% reported increased a sense of pride and accomplishment among the inmates.

1:58.0

Now, again, this has been going on for some time now, but my guess is that a lot of

2:03.7

people are like me, not even aware that it was going on. And Steve Green, I know that you're a

2:10.6

pet owner and lover, but I just thought, this is the closest thing that I have seen to somebody actually making an effort to make
